We once again find ourselves lining up for yet another comic book blockbuster, this one featuring the character of Ghost Rider, as portrayed by Nicolas Cage. Ghost Rider, a lesser known comic then say, X-Men or Fantastic Four, could probably have done without a silver screen incarnation, but hopefully it will be one that doesn’t disappoint.
Cage portrays Johnny Blaze, a motorcycle vigilante, who is forced to give up his soul to save his dying father to the devil, or as we know him: Mephisto (Peter Fonda). As a result he is forced to leave behind the love of his life, Roxanne Simpson (Eva Mendes), and his life is merely a shadow of what it once was. A few years later, Mephisto comes to him with a request. It seems that Mephisto’s son, and oddly enough enemy, Blackheart has sworn an oath to kill his father, so that he may rule over hell. Mephisto, ever a bargaining man, offers to return Blaze’s soul, and former life to him, if he can eliminate Blackheart and protect his legacy. And thus Ghost Rider is born, spawned from hell and fueled by Mephisto’s power. Ghost Rider fights crime, defends the innocent, and soon protects his former love Roxanne from those with evil intent, all while keeping his new powers a secret. While Nicolas Cage himself was not the best pick to play Johnny Blaze, the supporting cast is excellent. The two time Oscar Nominee Peter Fonda promises to bring a calm and deliciously sinister performance to the character of Mephisto, while Eva Mendes should prove to be a sweet but sassy Roxanne. Sam Eliot returns to the comic book movie scene from his hiatus from the Hulk in 2003, and is best known for his raspy voice and his role as the narrator in The Big Lebowski.
